moon on the water

[Verse 1 — Melodic Rap]
Rain on the sill, blue light on the ceiling
Phone face down, still know when I feel it
Nothing comes through, just a twitch in my hand
Guess the body holds on to what the mind never can

Your shirt on the chair, sleeves folded inward
I move it to sleep, put it back in the morning
Small little ritual, nobody sees
One half of the bed, one side of me

Typed “Hope you’re well,” watched the words turn strange
Like knocking on a house where the locks got changed
Left one dot, then erased that too
There’s a whole conversation I don’t send you

Fridge hum, pipes knock, somebody’s keys
For a second, I forget you don’t live here with me
Then the footsteps pass, and the feeling does too
I get up for some water. Nothing else to do.

[Hook — Sung]
Moon on the water
So close, so far away
I reach into the silence
You break before I touch your face

[Verse 2 — Melodic Rap]
White light spills from the store to the street
Two cans in my hand out of old routine
They touch, make a sound, and I stand there a while
Put yours back, keep mine, tell the clerk I’m fine

Down by the river, the last train shakes
A gold line loose on the water breaks
I follow it out till the buildings thin
Cold air finds where my coat lets it in

Scrolled back months to your last “I’m here”
Two little words that could bring you near
Now the same little screen puts a sea between
Who you were that night and who you are to me

When the rain comes hard, I still see you there
Under some doorway, shaking water from your hair
Almost call to ask if you made it through
Then the wind turns the page. I keep walking too.

[Hook — Sung]
Moon on the water
So close, so far away
I reach into the silence
You break before I touch your face

[Bridge — Half-Sung]
Had I held on longer
Would the morning have waited?
One last sip in your glass
I never had the heart to drain it

[Final Hook — Sung]
Moon on the water
I stayed till the sky went pale
Thought I could bring you closer
Came back with the cold on my hands

[Outro]
First bus crossing the bridge
Your moon slips out of sight
